(Before you get started make sure you have the following items: sod knife, fertilizer & spreader, wheel barrow and rake)
#1 If you haven't used a contractor to prepare soil, rototill up to 5" in depth and make sure area has been raked smooth and is free from clumps of dirt and weeds.
#2 Start laying sod from the back of the property along the longest straight edge. Work away from this line so you do not step on fresh sod. Stagger the ends (like bricks) to offset the seams. Push all edges and ends to fit together tightly. #3 Trim all edges around trees, sprinkler heads, side walks and curves with a sod knife. #4 As soon as you have finished, apply fertilizer immediately, to give your sod a good start. Water your sod with a hose or start your irrigation system immediately. For the first 2 weeks after installation water your new lawn daily it should be kept moist, but not standing in water. Water in the early morning and late evening hours. #5 Mowing has more to do with the long term survivability of your sod than any other function you will perform. Proper mowing will provide a beautiful thick, uniform lawn. Make sure your blade is sharp and set your mower high the first few times mowing. #6 First & Foremost remember "GREEN SIDE UP"! |
